Joan of Arc's battle

Project

ebook

Date

2005

Location

Utrecht

This book is in Dutch.
Joan of Arc’s battle was written for children of 12 years or older.

Napoleon, Cleopatra, Hannibal: everybody knows them, but to what extent? Were they some kind of superheroes, miles apart from our own day to day existence, or were they, at the end of the day, ordinary people like you and me?
Take Joan of Arc, for example. A seventeen year old girl, a teenager, who had nothing to do with politics or martial art ever in her life. And yet, that same teenager brought about an enormous change in the course of history.
How was that possible? What kind of person was Joan? And why did she do the things she did? If the answers to these questions intrigue you, this is definitely a book for you!

Why this book?
When I was with my daughter in Rouen, years ago, in the Joan of Arc museum, I noticed how little she really knew about Joan. For me Joan of Arc has always been a hangup: a girl who saved France and then died a horrible death, a death prophesized to her from the start.
I wrote this book for myself, to have a better understanding of what motivated her, and for children – and also for adults- to paint them a picture of this heroine in an accessible way, this heroine whose name everybody knows, but by no means always her history.
The story of Joan is remarkably well documented: almost all the proceedings of her trial are still there. So you can still see with your own eyes how clever this simple peasant girl took her stand against the powers that be on the other side of the table.
The book is written from three perspectives: Joan herself, two children representing France and Charles, the crown prince who owed his throne to Joan and who left her to her fate afterwards.
